He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Thoma and Frances Thoma (Meisenburg); his wife Ethel Ehrlich; his siblings, Bill (Edna), Marie Barth (Alfred), Arnold (Phyllis), Louis Pottebaum (Bernice), Joe (Betsy), Victor (Viola), Francis, Ernest (Alice), Larry and Don; and his siblings-in-law, Thomas Ehrlich (Rosie), Ina Hohmann (Robert), Fred Ehrlich Jr., Mark Ehrlich, Paul Ehrlich, Barbara Gaul (Dan), Vince Ehrlich (Dianne), Carl Pfeiler (Frances), Ernie Ehrlich, Fritz Ehrlich and Edwin Klaas.
He is survived by: his son Rich Thoma (Lynn) of Dubuque; his grandchildren, Gina Weber (Joe Pregler) and Jordan Weber (Melissa); his great grandchildren, BreeLyn, Olivia and Griffin Weber; his sister Patricia Klaas; and his siblings-in-law, Mary Thoma, Bertha Thoma, Bernice Ehrlich, Lois Ehrlich, Delores Ambrosy (Cletus), Norbert Ehrlich (Nancy), Marilyn Borgerding (Richard) and Linda Ehrlich. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory (3860 Asbury Rd, Dubuque, IA 52002). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 9th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Holy Spirit Parish- Holy Ghost (2921 Central Ave, Dubuque, IA 52001).
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
