He was predeceased by : his parents, Lloyd Edward and Elsie Myrtle Burns; his siblings, Paul D. Burns and Betty C. Mason; his stepsister LaDonna Schmidt; his siblings-in-law, Lauretta Burns and Charles Mason (Rockey); and his grandson Jamie L. Peters.

He is survived by : his wife Sylvia L. Hamon; his great grandchildren, Sherri L. Vesterby of Adel, IA and Sandra K. Kracht (James) of Aurelia, IA.; and his sons, Donald R. Burns, Jr. (Lynann) of Spirit Lake, IA and Rick A. Burns of Sac City, IA.. He is also survived by Many grandchildren and great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
