He was predeceased by: his parents, Lyle Smith and Eva Smith (Artzer); his wife Frances A. (Echelberger); and his siblings, James Smith, Kathy Witzke and Eddie Joe Smith.
He is survived by: his children, Michelle Nelson of Canton, IL, Chad Smith of Fort Dodge and Jason Smith of Fort Dodge; his grandchildren, Kegan Nelson of Fort Dodge, Kendra Friesth (Tanner) of Duncombe, IA and Xander Smith of Fort Dodge; his great grandchildren, Renley Jo and Ryder Scott; his sister Betty Ann Hefley of Fort Dodge; and his pet Eli. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held on Monday, May 18th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Historic Bruce Funeral Home (923 1st Ave S, Fort Dodge, IA 50501). A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 18th 2026 at 5:00 PM at the same location.
