He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Dewey and Etta Mae Settles (Case). He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Hammer; his sons, Sean Settles (Lindsay) of Fort Madison, Pete Settles (Chrissy) of West Point and Jon Settles (Emily) of Columbus Junction; his grandchildren, Katlynn Mason (Cody), Rodric Settles (Elizabeth), Danen, Jarrett, Tanner, Tauren, Tate, Paul and Eve Settles; his great grandchildren, Brooke, Luke, Kane, Dakota and Beckham; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Bristol and Berkley; and his sister Carol Durbin (Terry) of Bella Vista, Arkansas.. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established in his memory for the West Point Fire and Rescue.
