He was predeceased by: his parents, Ivan Holmes and Dorothy Holmes; his former wife Judith "Judy" Holmes; his siblings, Terry Holmes and Joyce Anderson; and his daughter-in-law Ramona Holmes.
He is survived by: his wife Judith Juel; his children, Dean Holmes of Fort Madison, Iowa and Dana Kelly (Craig) of Fort Madison, Iowa; and his grandchildren, Trail Kelly (Sarah) of West Point, Bryce Jarvis (Brien) of Canton and Carlee Kelly of New London, Iowa.
Memorials in Sonny's memory may be made to the Fort Madison Saddle Club or the Fairview Cemetery Association.
