He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Kann and Helen Kann (Meyer); his parents-in-law, Ray and Mae Berns; and his siblings-in-law, Douglas Hamilton, Donald Berns (Carolyn), Norman Berns (Betty) and Mary Schmitz (James).
He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Berns; his children, Adam Kann (Wendy) of Ryan, Matthew Kann (Sarah) of Ankeny, David Kann (Rhonda) of Garber and Sarah Flowers (Brad) of North Liberty; his grandchildren, Josh (Taylor), Warren, Ethan, Madalyn (Easton), Andrea, Morgan, James, Hailey, Erin, Cooper, Jace, Piper, Lily and Dylan; his great grandchildren, Camden and Caroline; his sisters, Ruth Hamilton, Wendy Gossett (Mike), Dinah Hodapp (Keith), Linda Lampson (Duane) and Charlene Staade (Tom); and his sisters-in-law, Jane Siegel (David), Jeanette Thein (Pat) and Melissa Schmitz. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Garnavillo, the Garnavillo Firefighters' Association and EMS, and the NE IA Vietnam Vet's "Giard Memorial Park" project.
