He was predeceased by: his parents, Sam Altena and Wilma Altena (Wynia); his father-in-law Art Kelderman; his sister Lorna Altena; his brothers-in-law, Ron Healy and Arn Kelderman; and his nephew Scott Healy.

He is survived by: his wife Kathy Altena of George, IA; his son Cory Altena (Shelly) of George, IA; his granddaughters, Kinsly and Keilahny; his sister Eloise Healy; his mother-in-law Gert Kelderman; and his siblings-in-law, Carol Kelderman, Peg Pollema (Junior), Mark Kelderman (Donna), Bob Kelderman (Twila), Sue Wisse (Sam), Lori Koedam (Ed) and Jerry Kelderman (Nikki). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
