He was predeceased by: his parents, Keith Winkle and Mildred Van Winkle; his wife Marty Van Winkle; his brother Rick Van Winkle; his parents-in-law, Leo and Jane Dublinske; and his brothers-in-law, Bill Handy and Marc Dublinske.

He is survived by: his children, Holly Van Winkle of Ames and Kris Vinson (Mike) of Roland; his grandchildren, Dana and Braden; his child Kyle Van Winkle (Jenna) of Ames; his grandchildren, Kruise, Riggins, Collins and Colbie; his sister Judy Handy of California; his niece Cassie; and his nephew Nick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be directed toward establishing a scholarship fund for Roland-Story students, as well as supporting local.
