He was predeceased by: his parents, Louis James and Esther Smothers (Sammon); his daughter Jodie Gallagher; his brothers, Jim, Raymond, Fred and Jack Smothers; and his nephews, Todd Hess and Lester Smothers.
He is survived by: his wife Carole Smothers of Grinnell; his son David Smothers (Annie) of Grinnell; his son-in-law Larry Gallagher of Grinnell; his grandchildren, Tatum Choate, Ella Smothers, Lexie and Jack Gallagher; his great grandchild Finley Vos; his brothers, Bill Smothers (Charlene) of Marshalltown and Ed Smothers of Winterset; and his sisters-in-law, Jan Keenan of Colfax, Kaye Smothers of Newton, Virginia Smothers and Pat Smothers of Montezuma. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
