He was predeceased by: his parents, Emil Carstens and Helen Carstens; his wife Helen; his brother-in-law Bill Gray; his grandson Stephen Carstens; and his daughter-in-law Colleen Carstens.

He is survived by: his children, Susan Davisson (Gary), Scott Carstens (Kim), Jill Crotts (David), Anita Laffey (Lon) and Chris Carstens (Amy); and his sisters, Sharon Duncanson (Russell) and Marlis Gray.
