She was predeceased by: her parents, Raymond Roger Leary and Mabel Ingeborg Leary (Petersen); and her brother-in-law Cleveland "Buck" Morris. She is survived by: her husband Dave Nelson of Independence; her sons, Roger Johnson of Independence, Mike Johnson (Jana) of Independence, Brian Nelson (Michelle) of Andover and Jeff Nelson of Independence; her stepmother Erma Leary of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her sisters, Joan Oliphant (Keith) of Vinton, Betty Decker (John) of Walker, Janice Morris of Vinton and Joyce Decker (Ben) of Victoria, Texas; and her sister-in-law Deb Nelson of Independence. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 7th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church (115 6th Ave NW, Independence, IA 50644). A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 8th 2025 at 10:30 AM at the same location.
Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the family to be used to establish a scholarship for future nursing students.
