He is survived by: his wife Cora Elaine Tassell of Kanawha, Iowa; his children, Shawn Mallen (Betty) of Britt, Dennis Mallen (Jody) of Urbandale, Dan Mallen (Chris) of Urbandale, Michelle Amundson of Mason City, Debbie Otto (Tom) of Clear Lake, Lynn Rietema (Bob) of Sioux Center and Maggie Christensen (Andy) of Kanawha; his grandchildren, James Mallen (Nikki), Mary Johnson (Justin), John Mallen (Jami), Sarah Hottle (Dakota), Anna Janssen (Wil), Louis Duda, Mackenzie Litten (Blake), Kelsey Christensen (Tyler), Keaton Mallen, Ryan Amundson (Taylor), Nick Amundson (Tatjana), Morgan Amundson, Dan Hartl (Melissa), Amy Otto, Adam Otto (Jessica), Jamie Horowitz (Michael), Jill Graff (Caleb), John Rietema (Alicia), Emmorie Stokka (Eric), Austin Stokka, Chase Stokka (Anna), Elliana Christensen and Dane Christensen; his great grandchildren, Aidan, Alaina, Reese, McKinley, Quinn, Finley, Owen, Lucas, Madeline, Raegan, Addyson, Harper, Brynlee, Makayla, Lincoln, Collins, Knox, Lydia, Cora, Cecelia, Kayden and Karson; and his siblings, Gennell West and Pat Mallen. He is also survived by other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, James' family suggests that memorial contributions may be left in his memory to the Kanawha EMT, West Hancock Ambulance Service, Kanawha Fire Department, Hancock County Health System, Liberty School or American Diabetes Association, and sent to their attention c/o Ewing Funeral Home, P.O.
