He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Ernest Mercer and Lela Evada Mercer (Johnson); his brother Darrel Mercer; his sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (Oshell) and Lucille (Clark); his brother Donald Mercer; his brother-in-law Glenn Payton; his parents-in-law, Harold and Neva Keplinger (Gilbert); his brother-in-law Gary Keplinger; and his nephew Rodney Doser.

He is survived by: his wife Judy Mercer (Keplinger) of Kellerton, IA; his children, Sandy Fairbanks (Carter Fairbanks) of Bullhead City, AZ, Mark Mercer and Jason Mercer (Tega); his grandchildren, Grant and Nella Mercer of Wake Forest, NC; his sisters, Donna Payton (Mercer) of Lamoni, IA and Dola Doser (Raymond Doser) of Lovilla, IA; and his sister-in-law Janet Mercer (Huff) of Mount Ayr, IA..
