He is survived by: his daughter Brenda Merkel (Stephan) of Trier, Germany; his stepchildren, Jodie Johnson of Andrew, IA and Bill Johnson of Kewanee; and his grandchildren, Leonie and Nicolas Merkel of Trier, Germany..
