It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Dennis M. Cunningham of Marion, Iowa, who passed away on December 11, 2020, at the age of 59, leaving to mourn family and friends. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Grover Cunningham and Barbara Cunningham. He is survived by: his wife Anne Cunningham of Marion; his children, Natalie Cunningham of Corydon, David Cunningham (Carleigh Studtmann) of Chadwick and Bonnie Cunningham of Marion; and his siblings, Mark Cunningham (Liz), Robin Hartman (Joe), Jerry Cunningham and Mike Cunningham. He is also survived by extended family members including in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

All guests are respectfully requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.

Memorials in Dennis' memory may be made to Cornerstone Church in Marion, or a favorite charity of the donor's choice.

“In 2000, Dennis joined RJK Technologies as the lead software engineer for the X-31 Vector program. This program achieved a completely automated, successful landing at 24 degrees angle of attack. I feel privileged to have worked with an amazing team of engineers on the X-31 program. Dennis was an important part of the teams success. I have attached a photo of Dennis and I standing on the side of the runway when the X-31 achieved this historical event. Dennis is in the red shirt.”

The X-31 was an amazing research program that achieved many aviation firsts including the first aircraft to fly in controlled flight at 70 degrees Angle of Attack.”

“I am very saddened by the loss of Dennis. He was a wonderful friend and father. I met Dennis in 1985 and I was honored to have worked with him for almost 20 years. I have worked in the aerospace industry for almost 40 years and I have never met a more talented engineer. But it was not just his expertise I appreciated. He was always there to listen, help and offer wise advice I have great memories of us roasting green chili’s together and of course, you would need to try one of his home brews”
