He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Barnts and Kathryn Barnts; his sister Kay Christian; his brothers-in-law, Dean Christian, Mark Terwilliger and Dan Smith; and his granddaughter Cecilia McKinley.
He is survived by: his wife Penny Barnts; his daughters, Kate Lyon (Warren) of Hiawatha, IA, Anna Barnts (Nick Lehrter) of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mattie Barnts (Nathan Flathers) of Denver, CO and Melanie Rainbow-Harel (Yochai Harel) of Iowa City, IA; his grandchildren, Emmett, Maggie Lyon, Emilia and Teodor Harel; and his siblings-in-law, Steve Terwilliger (Verlee), Joe Barger (Christy) and Barb Smith. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
