He was predeceased by: his mother Leona Dolter (Schroeder); his daughter Caroline Marie; his sisters, Mary Ann "Minnie" Steil and Carol Karlin; and his brothers-in-law, Norm Steil and James "Fred" Hirsch.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Hedrick of Marion; his children, Russell Dolter (Lissa) of Keokuk, Alan Dolter of Cedar Rapids and Angela Shook of Marion; his grandchildren, Noah and Makenzie Shook of Marion; his stepgrandchildren, Rebbeccah Snyder (Hayden Brison) of Cedar Rapids, Emily Turney (Jacob) of Urbandale, Helena Snyder and David Snyder of Johnston, Iowa; his stepgreat-grandchildren, August, Jamie, Malcom, Matilda and Daphne; and his sisters, Donna Hirsch of Dubuque and Ruth Konrardy of Florida.
