He is survived by: his father Lester Bates; his daughter Tessa Bates (Joe Gleason); his grandchildren, Benjamin Gleason and Chloe Gleason; his siblings, Terry Bates (Laurie Duryee) and Becky Bates (Jarett Krull); and his siblings' children, Eric, Lindsey, Asher, Stephanie, Jessica and Charlie. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.

Visitation was held on Monday, September 22nd 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel (126 3rd St NE, Mason City, IA 50401). A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, September 23rd 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel (126 3rd St NE, Mason City, IA 50401).

In practices, coach would call him to get in, and he'd take off running /shuffeling onto the field, uttering his proverbial "F...€", only as brett does . Remember a teacher ran him down for chew in his pocket, he said it was a mary K cosmetic kit. Brett had character, gritt, personality and quick whitt. I pray he is with the Lord and that I will see him again”
