He was predeceased by: his parents, Janice Marlene Powell Bertelson and Gerald "Jerry" Richard Bertelson; and his former wife Liz Rodewald. He is survived by: his daughter Kylie Lorenzen (Eric) of Woodbine; his stepchildren, Carter and Mya; his stepmother Sharon Bertelson of Missouri Valley; his brother Chris Bertelson (Laura) of Winterset, Iowa; and his nieces, Lizzy Bertelson (Miguel) of Baltimore, Carri Bertelson (Eric) of Boston, Christan Hoefling (Mitch) of Phoenix, Arizona and Kati Bertelson of Des Moines, Iowa.
