He was predeceased by: his parents, James Harlan and Alice Josephine Messer (Roach); his wife Marcia Rae Ross; and his siblings, Betty Smith, Wanda Bair, Lola Swan and Delmar Messer.

He is survived by: his children, Doug (Dee) of Kodak, TN and Coree Eland (Donald) of Mt. Pleasant; his grandchildren, Jeremy Eland (Brittany) and Randee Duncan (Zach); his great grandchildren, Kenley Elise Eland, Lennox Nicole Eland and Bralee Radon Duncan; and his siblings, Marvin Messer (Sandy) of Burlington, James Messer (Roma Jean) of Mt. Pleasant and Marilyn Rheinschmidt of Burlington, IA..
