He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo Bert and Lerla Opal Smith (Feldman); his wife Mary Frances; his sisters, Barbara Smith, Rosemary Graham, Wuanita Rich and Ivaleen Goudie; and his sons-in-law, John Jones and David VanSickle.
He is survived by: his children, Christina Hoenig (Doug) of Ames, Brian Smith (Cindy) of Mount Pleasant, Carla Jones of Mount Pleasant, Sarah Jirak (Mike) of New London, Natalie VanSickle of Marion and Adam Smith (Brooke) of Mount Pleasant; his grandchildren, Aaron (Holly), Andreas Hoenig, Justin Smith, Cody Smith (Amy), Austin Smith, Kaitlin Wade (Randy), Marcus Jones, Elizabeth Huppenbauer (David), Courtney and Delaney Smith; his great grandchildren, Abel Hoenig, Noel Hoenig, Silas Hoenig, Taylor Wade, Junior Wade, Harper Huppenbauer and Jordy Huppenbauer; and his sister Yvonne Rich of Mount Pleasant.
