He was predeceased by: his parents, Daniel Spears and Frances Spears (Tisue); his grandson Samuel Malcom; and his brothers, Kenneth Spears and Dennis Spears.

He is survived by: his wife Annette Spears of Newton; his daughters, Tracy Malcom (Jeremy) of Queen Creek, Arizona and Kymber Anderson of Denver, Colorado; his grandchildren, Sabrina Malcom and Jacob Anderson; and his sister Connie Haluska (Mike) of Decorah.
