He was predeceased by: his parents, Delwin Koon and Margaret Koon (Chebuhar); and his brother-in-law Dave Curry. He is survived by: his siblings, Dan Koon (Kelley) of Overland Park, Mary Mattix (Danny) of Monroe and Diane Curry of Bondurant; his siblings' child Ryan Mattix (Liz); and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Omar (Maja), Youseif, Sawyer and Emerson.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 13th 2025 at 2:00 PM and from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory (1115 E 19th St N, Newton, IA 50208-2539). Mel loved animals, especially his two cats, Covid and Ginger.
Memorials to the South Skunk Blues Society or an Animal Rescue League of the Donor's Choice may be left at the celebration of life or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
