He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Oakland and Myrtle Oakland (Peterson); his parents-in-law, Myron and Lorraine Houg; his siblings, Marie Decker (Carl), Harold, Herman Oakland (Ileta) and Lloyd Oakland; his sister-in-law Susan Houg; his nephew Randy Butikofer; his niece Lisa Hageman; and his great-nephew Bryan Sickles.

He is survived by: his wife Marlys; his daughter Kaarn McCarty (Chad); his grandchildren, Ava, Declan and Savannah of Peterson, IA; his daughter Julie Luzum (Jeff); his grandsons, Easton and Gavin of Decorah, IA; his daughter Leann Harris (Jacob); his grandchildren, Gracin and Kadence of Earlville, IA; his daughter Wendy Walters; his grandchild Sidney of Kansas City, MO.; his brother Kermit Oakland (Linda) of Ossian; and his siblings-in-law, Pat Oakland of Castalia, IA, Marvin Houg of Cedar Rapids, IA, Loren Houg of Aplington, IA and Lowell Houg (Sharon) of Elgin, IA.
