He was predeceased by: his parents, Marion Poortinga and Elizabeth Van Schevikhoven Poortinga; his parents-in-law, Floyd Tool and Bernice; his siblings, Duane Poortinga and Evelyn Baarda; his brother-in-law Dale; and his stepbrothers, David Van Hulzen and Nelson Van Hulzen.
He is survived by: his wife Karen Beth Tool; his daughter Cindy Foster; his son-in-law Wayne Foster of Reasnor; his son Kevin Poortinga (Chad Sievers) of Indianapolis, IN; his grandchildren, Tyler Foster (Kelsey White) of Grand Rapids, MI and Madison Foster (Isaac Telfer); his sister Nancy Spoelstra; his brother-in-law Clarence of Pella; his sisters, Phyllis Ramer of Otley and Sharon Steenhoek; his siblings-in-law, David of Pella, Fran Poortinga and Richard Tool of Rio Rancho, NM; and his stepsisters, Judy Savard and Elaine Funk. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
