He was predeceased by : his parents, Elmer Herbst and Agnes Herbst (Stessman); his former life partner Carol Lee Herbst; and his brothers, Donald and William Herbst.

He is survived by : his fiancée Jo Rath; his children, Timothy Herbst (Kristi) of Harlan, Elizabeth (Paul Bencker, Sr.) of Bennington, Laura (Craig Doerhoff) of Ankeny and Linda (Walter Ney) of Sheridan, Indiana; and his siblings, Jan Theulen of Panama, Carol (Ron Mickels) of Omaha, Diane Dermond of Oakland, Jean Hesse of Fairfax, Peg Shawver of Sacramento, Theodore Herbst (Shirley) of Cedar Rapids and James Herbst (Joan) of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He is also survived by ten grandsons; one great grandson.

A prayer was held on Sunday, April 14th 2024 at 4:00 PM at the St. Mary's Parish Hall (104 N 2nd St, Panama, IA 51562). A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, April 15th 2024 at 10:30 AM at the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church (208 St Marys Ave, Panama, IA 51562).
