He was predeceased by: his brothers-in-law, John Schreiber, Lester Jansen and Wayne Jansen; and his in-laws, Darlene and Norm Jansen.

He is survived by: his wife Nancy Merges of Sherrill, IA; his children, Emily Merges (Kenny Arnold) of Luxemburg, IA, Amanda Merges (Adam Cook) of Sherrill, IA and Michael Merges (Caitlyn Fields); his grandchildren, Josie, Maggie and Oliver; his siblings, Frank Merges Jr. (Eileen) of Dubuque, IA and Rosemary Schreiber of Dubuque, IA; and his siblings' children, Jenny Bunning (Ottis), Diane Brehm (Doug), Steve Schreiber (Christina) and Joe Schreiber.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Sherrill Fire Department.
