He is survived by: his wife Ilene Kathryn Hoins of Sumner; his children, Ranae Carey (Kevin) of Ionia and Craig Petersen (Sally) of Sumner; his grandchildren, Megan Petersen, Wade Petersen, Courtney Schmidt (Dan), Ben Carey (Nicole McGuire) and Cameron Carey (Cori); his great grandchildren, Isabel and Elleann Schmidt; his brother Donald Petersen (Julie) of Fredrika; and his sister-in-law Jane Petersen of Fredericksburg. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Sunday, September 13th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Monday, September 14th 2026 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the St. John Lutheran Church - Sumner (109 Washington St, Sumner, IA 50674). A funeral service was held on Monday, September 14th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to St. John Lutheran Church, SEMS, Sumner Community Hospital, Hillcrest Home, Waverly Area Veterans Post or Gunderson Hospice.
