He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank H. Mellinger and Gladys E. Mellinger (Bell); his son Timothy; and his siblings, Violet Boecker and Kenneth Mellinger.

He is survived by: his wife Loretta Kibling; his children, Roseanne Mellinger (Max Morrow) of Louisiana, Carol Karian (David) of California, Mark Mellinger (Cheryl) of Maryland, Gary Mellinger (Janine) of Iowa, Scott Mellinger (Cindy) of Iowa, Angela Zook (Rusty) of Iowa and Melissa Cardwell (Kevin) of Iowa; his sister Joyce Morris of Oklahoma; and his sister-in-law Lynda Mellinger of Iowa. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren.
