She was predeceased by: her parents, Joseph Vaala and Alice Vaala (Anderson); her brothers, Jerry (Char) and Harlan Vaala; her sister-in-law Karen Bedard; her nephew Tom Bedard; and her cousins, Barbara Loehr and Nancy Bedard.

She is survived by: her husband James; her children, Michele Rippentrop (Patrick) of Cedar Falls, Jim Bedard (Kris) of Marshalltown and Joe; her grandchildren, Melissa Timm, Michael Schleusner, Jon Bedard (Lyndi), Laura Prunty (Mike) and Kevin Rippentrop (Abby); her great grandchildren, Gavin, Carter, Nolan Timm, Dean and Drew Schleusner; and her pet Benny.
