He was predeceased by: his parents, Orma Carstens (Gingerich) and Bernard Carstens; his brothers, Jerome and Bruce Carstens; and his nephew Eric Olson.
He is survived by: his wife Andrea Bie Carstens of Waterville, IA; his sons, Steven Carstens of Minneapolis and Nicholas Carstens (Raelen) of Decorah, IA; his granddaughter Joan; his siblings, Linda Carstens, Verlis Carstens (Le), Dennis Carstens and Wilmer Carstens (Marion); and his sister-in-law Marcia Carstens. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
