He was predeceased by: his parents, Delbert Mathis and Anna Mathis (Troendle); his parents-in-law, Leonard and Bernice Thies; his brother Earl; his son-in-law Lance Schmitt; his nephew Jason Kaeppel; and his niece Meghan Thies.

He is survived by: his wife Kathy Thies; his children, Jennifer Durham (Dwayne) of Centerville, IA, Eric Mathis of Marion, IA and Sara Schmitt of Onalaska, WI; his grandchildren, Conner Mathis, Maggie Mathis, Wessley Schmitt and Avery Schmitt; his siblings, Clete (Karen), Cyril (Shirley), John (Juliet), Eloise Reed (Glen) and Mary Kaeppel (Daren); and his siblings-in-law, Gail Mathis, Jim Thies (Marilyn), Kim Thies (Barb), Mark Thies, Larry Thies (Elaine), Todd Thies and Ronn Thies (Renee). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
