He was predeceased by: his parents, James Dunbar and Opal Arlene Dunbar (DeVries); his daughter Suzanne "Suzy"; and his brothers, John, Jerry and James Dunbar.

He is survived by: his wife Peggy Dunbar of Waverly, Iowa; his children, Michele Lathrop (Steve) of Waterloo, Melissa Strohmeyer (Steve) of St. Louis and John Dunbar of Cedar Falls, Iowa; his grandchildren, Ashley, Michael, Nicholas, Marcus and Opal; and his brothers, Bill Dunbar (Jane) of Spearfish and Francis Dunbar of Runnells, Iowa.. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to either St. Mary Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
