He was predeceased by: his parents, LeVerne Jochims and Evelyn Jochims (Bauer); his sister Joelle; and his brother-in-law Jim Johannsen. He is survived by: his wife Debra J. DeSpain Phillips; his brother Jeff (Lin) of Holstein, IA; his sons, Chris of Burlington, Greg (Shelley) of Burlington and Mike of Cypress, TX; his stepchildren, Jeffrey Phillips (Annie) of Burlington and Melissa Johnston (David) of Falls Church, VA; his grandchildren, Alexa, Ryan, Lauren, Ava, Braden, Madison, Kaydence, Preston, Kylie Brown (Ben), Brenna, Gabrielle Gaillard (Matisse), Brant (Machaela), Hayden, Riley, Addison and Eila; and his great grandchildren, Kelton, Banks, Archie, Louise, Nino, Sonny and Rush. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the SCC Foundation and the First United Methodist Church.
