He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert August "Abbie" and Maxine Elaine Gumm (Bonovsky); his former wife Alice Gumm; his son-in-law Jim Buehler; his granddaughter Jordynn Eschweiler; and his sisters, Pamela Gumm and Mary Hurd.

He is survived by: his children, Kim Eckhoff (Rod) of Oelwein, Annette West (Larry) of West Union, Lori Buehler of Westgate and Kennon Gumm (Katie) of West Union; and his grandchildren, Andrea Kadera (Brad), Heather Soll, Craig Soll, Scott Soll, Madilin Eckhoff, Carson Eckhoff, Alesha McShane (Galen), Jason West (Rebecca), Lyle Buehler (Valarie), LaRae O'Brien (Justin), Jamie Vargason, Collin Gumm and Caleb Gumm. He is also survived by 17 great grandchildren.
