He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond Schaefer and Florence Schaefer (Folkmann); and his siblings, Duane Schaefer and Judith Bush (Karl). He is survived by: his nephews, Michael Bush of Fairfax, David Bush of Hiawatha and Brad Schaefer (Greer Wellstead) of Des Moines; his niece Laura Langenberg (Bryan) of Lakeland; and his sister-in-law Susan Schaefer of North English.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Lutheran Interparish School or St. Paul Lutheran Church.
