He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard A. Butler and Doris K. Rockwood Butler; his brothers, Don Lott and Max Butler; his son Lance Hicks (Bucki); and his son-in-law Landon Barnes.

He is survived by: his wife Tauna Wheeler Butler of Blackfoot; his children, Vance L. Butler (Amy Larsen), Darcy Butler-Barnes (Joshua Fields), Ryan C. Moore (Shannie), Meggan K. Taylor (Jody) and Kodi M. Parkinson (Nathan); and his sisters, DeLorus Clovis (Bud) and June Lowe (Rob). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren.
