He was predeceased by: his parents, Takuji Akiyama and Toyono Fukumoto Akiyama; his wife Janet Pearl Fletcher Akiyama; his siblings, Kenji Akiyama, Chieko Akiyama Mayeda and Mikiko Akiyama Harada; his stepson Keith Douglas Esperum; and his granddaughter Camille Lyn Akiyama.
He is survived by: his friend Sonja Gayle Stone; his siblings, Soji, Kaiji Akiyama and Keyko Siverman (Steven); his sons, Kelly Joe (Marlene) and Scott Akiyama; the mother of his children Linda Cornelison Exler; his stepson Kenneth Duane Esperum; Rebecca Esperum.
