He was predeceased by: his parents, Lavar Ira Thornton and Alzina Kloepfer; his sister Alzina Mae Egbert; his daughter-in-law Lisa Thornton; and his grandson Matthew Roberts.

He is survived by: his children, Bradley, Brad Thornton (Julie), Anne Thornton, Layne Thornton (Lori) and Connie Roberts (Troy); and his siblings, Darl Thornton (Linda), Joel Thornton (Karen), Arland Thornton (Shirley), Del Thornton, Ralene Patten (Courtney) and Royce Thornton. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
