“Gene and I were first year orthopedic residents in Albuquerque NM in 1976. We had been working together for only one month when my wife was admitted to our hospital for the delivery of our first child on a day that I was on call for emergencies. It was a busy day for orthopedic admissions and I was only able to visit my wife in labor briefly and infrequently. Gene sat by my wife’s bedside for hours at a time offering support and encouragement. Our son, was born in the early morning hours.”
