He was predeceased by: his parents, John Harley Wilkins, II and Ruth Standard Wilkins; and his uncle Dr. Harold F. Wilkins. He is survived by: his wife Sigrid "Sigi" Koehler-Wilkins; his sister Leslie Wilkins (Richard Priest); his sons, Jay Wilkins (Tricia), Jeff Wilkins (Lindsey), Mark Wilkins (Erin) and Mitch Wilkins; the mother of his children Donna Wilkins; his grandchildren, Hallie, Quinn, Klein, Katie, Adam, Matt, Abby, Emma and Luke; his niece Jordan Priest; his stepchildren, Sonja Koehler and Sven Koehler (Amy); and his stepgrandchildren, Mimi and Max.
John's final gift was the donation of his body to the Indiana University School of Medicine for medical education.
