He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert Gardner and Bessie Steingrandt Gardner; his former life partner Rayvella Austin; his siblings, Charles Gardner and Enola Howell; and his granddaughter Jessica Gardner.

He is survived by : his wife Dora Allgood; his children, Collene Reynolds (Jon), Leland Gardner (Sue), Rick Gardner (Vicki), Mark Gardner (Judy), Janelle Coons (Rob), Kent Gracey (Carolyn), Kristi Lancaster (Ray) and Jim Steingrandt (Debbie); and his sister Dorothy Hobdy (Bob). He is also survived by 22 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
