He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Engel and Louise Engel (Bauer); and his sisters, Marge Cook of Earlville and Dona Pike of Aurora. He is survived by: his brother Wayne Engel (Marilyn) of Freeburg, IL; his former wife Sandra Engel of Normal, IL; his children, Dawn Wall (Tom) of Bloomington, IL, Steve Engel of Somonauk, IL and Mark Engel of Somonauk, IL; his grandchildren, Rachel Wall and Tommy Wall; his girlfriend Joyce Devore; and his pet Danny. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

“I'm very sad to hear of your passing, I've never called you Gary but instead called you Mr. Engel until I came to know you better and then I called you Grandpa. As the years passed knowing you, I came to love you. You taught me many things in life... Gardening, patience and compassion ( I'll never forget you paying homeless guys to shovel your driveway) Although you tried to maintain a gruff exterior I could see your kind heart and your love.
