He was predeceased by: his siblings, Allen Kooy (late Mabelle), Ronald Kooy (late Anne), Lorraine (late Lester Hoekstra) and Wayne Kooy (late Joyce); his daughter Caryn Lorraine Kooy; and his great grandchild Nathan Henry Feenstra.
He is survived by: his wife Carrie Kooy; his children, Lora Firlit (Paul) and Gerald Kooy (Nanci); his grandchildren, Jon Firlit (Rachel), Karie Roeda (Joshua), David Firlit (Christine), Karyn Firlit, Laurie DeJong (Tim), Jennifer Sikma (Michael), Gerald Jr. Kooy (Hannah), Andrew Kooy (Allison) and Kristina Feenstra (Paul); his great grandchildren, Molly, Ethan Firlit, Aubrey, Addison, Amelia Roeda, Jackson, Elsie, Sadie Firlit, Bryce, Aiden, Melanie, Jude, Laurén DeJong, Evan, Bristol, Penny Van Baren, Charlotte, Nora and Levi Kooy; and his sibling Dale Kooy (Shirley).
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 20th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Monday, September 21st 2026 at 9:00 AM at the Smits Funeral Home (2121 Pleasant Springs Ln, Dyer, IN 46311). A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 21st 2026 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Monday, September 21st 2026 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at the Skyline Memorial Park (24800 S Governors Hwy, Monee, IL 60449).
