He is survived by: his wife Mary Ann Appel; his children, Randy Appel, Karen Beardsley (David), Barbara Peltason (James) and Susan Kimball (Andy); and his sisters, Judy Saeger and Janie Gaubatz. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
