The family announces the passing of John R. Platter of Bethalto, Illinois on September 15, 2026. John, born on February 12, 1943, was part of many shared moments and relationships throughout life. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Wesley R. Platter and Velda Platter (Costello); and his brother Steve Platter. He is survived by: his wife Sandy of John's Lutheran Church; his sons, Rob Sontag (Vicki) of Washington, MO and Tom Sontag (Rachel) of Bethalto; his sisters, JoAnn Hand (Mike) of Florida, Susan Hurley of California and Maria Robdelo; his sister-in-law Mary Ann Brown of Jerseyville; his grandchildren, Lizzy Drummond (Drew), Hayden Sontag (Ashley) and Hannah Hubbard (John); Bobby Weeks, John and Linda Allen. He is also survived by great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 24th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Homes - Bethalto (727 E Bethalto Blvd, Bethalto, IL 62010). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 24th 2026 at 6:30 PM at the Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home (727 E Bethalto Blvd, Bethalto, IL 62010). A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, September 25th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church (132 Butcher St, Bethalto, IL 62010).
Memorials may be made to a local food pantry, Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, or, in John's memory, by simply being thoughtful and kind to others and paying if forward.
