He was predeceased by: his son Matthew Deien; his granddaughter Avery Deien; his siblings, Bonnie, Mary Beth Deien, James Deien and Robert Deien; his siblings-in-law, Mary Ellen Deien, Betty, Felix Wilke, Virgil Heimann, Bill and Jean Heimann; and his nephews, Kurt Lammers and Joey Deien.

He is survived by: his wife Janet Deien of Breese; his sons, Tim Deien (Luciana) of Breese, Steve Deien (Carol) of Aviston, Greg Deien (Jackie) of Breese and Nathan Deien (Julie) of Aviston; his grandchildren, Brandon Deien, Andrew Deien (Mee Vang), Kelsey Deien (Troy Ennen), Alex Deien (Jasmin Torres), Rachel, Chloe, Bennett, Evan Deien, Aiden and Caleb Deien; his great grandchild Ethan Deien; his sisters, Margie Lammers (Kenny) of Breese and Judy Deien of Carlyle; and his sisters-in-law, Linda Reynolds of Breese, Carol Deien of St. Peters, MO and Janet Heimann of Germantown.

Mel enjoyed running his bulldozer, but above all, he loved wildlife, especially deer hunting, and even harvested an antelope and mule deer with the Jared Burke Foundation.
