He is survived by: his wife Thyra K. Russell; his daughter Alicia Mae Joens (Justin Joens); his grandson Preston Joens; his stepgrandson Donald Joens (Marcy); his brother James Russell; his sisters-in-law, Suva Vincent and Sharalee Dowd (Rick); Rose and Lila. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Southern Illinois University Foundation, specifically, the SIU Press or Morris Library.
