He was predeceased by: his parents, Theodore Wessel and Ida Wessel (Grefe); his siblings, LeRoy Wessel (Gladys), Edwin Wessel (Martha), Irvin Wessel (Bernice), Gilbert Wessel (Evelyn), Alfred Wessel (Mary), Hilda Armstrong (Albert), Dorothy Liman (Joe), Ruth Hanenberger, Marcella Mensing (Leroy) and Amanda Monken (Norman); and his siblings-in-law, Gloria Koehler, Naomi Wernsman (Dale), Wilson Fauke and Moon Koehler.
He is survived by: his wife Lola Koehler; his sons, Jeff Wessel (Theresa) of Germantown and Dale Wessel (Lisa) of Carlyle; his grandchildren, Kendra Quartz (Dan), Morgan Kuhl (John White), Trishia Kohnen (Mark), Nathan Jansen (Angie), Melissa Rainey (Bryan) and Jessica Bachesta (Kevin); his great grandchildren, Lukas, Eli Quartz, Kali, Zoey Kuhl, Christian Kohnen (Brittany), Riley Kohnen (Bryleigh Prest), Alaina Kohnen, Quinn, Marley Jansen, Corbin Willis (Mary Kate), Dylan Willis and Brooks Rainey; his great great grandchild Mateo Kohnen; his brother Ted Wessel (Rosalie); and his sister-in-law Donna Fauke.
Memorials made in memory of Wayne are suggested to St. John's Lutheran School in Nashville, Trinity Lutheran School in Hoffman, or the Posey Cemetery and will be received at church or at Nordike Funeral Home, 740 Fairfax Street, Carlyle, IL 62231.
