He was predeceased by: his parents, Joshua Stephens and Tula Stephens (Eaker); his wife Evelyn; his children, John Stephens II, James Stephens, David Stephens, Robert Stephens and Emily Sonnier; his brother Jim Stephens; and his grandchildren, Ashley Herrin and Scarlet Daisy Jane Joyce.
He is survived by: his daughters, Shelley Embry (Jim) of Greenfield and Mandy Joyce (Nathan) of Godfrey; his siblings, Della Conry of East Alton, Kay Purdy (John) of Virginia and Robert Stephens of Iowa; and his grandchildren, Jayme Buckley (Jarred), Heather Herrin, Stephanie Herrin, Noah Herrin (Starla), Joshua Heaton, Dylan Embry (Katelyn), Delaney Miller (Colton), Alex Stephens, Sean Stephens, Lydia Steckel (Max), Calvin Joyce (Aubrey) and Grant Joyce. He is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
